Причину этого явления в наших широтах назвал учёный Сергей Симак – такое возникает из-за вспышек на Солнце:

«Потоки частиц от таких вспышек на скорости 300-1200 км/сек - солнечный ветер, достигают верхней атмосферы Земли и вызывают ионизацию и свечение молекул в атмосфере».
